Friends of the Library Book Sale. Saturday, November 1, from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. Hundreds of gently-used books will be offered at $1 for hardcovers, 50 cents to a dollar for paperbacks, and 25-50 cents for all children’s books. Popular fiction, biographies, romance, nonfiction, and audio books will be available. Proceeds benefit the Library’s collections, programs and services.
 
Kids! SPROUTS, a family lap-sit program. Saturdays, November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and December 6 and 13, from 10:30 - 10:50 a.m. in the Children's Room. Babies from birth through 36-months and their parents gather with Heather on the story quilt for a rollickin’ good time with nursery rhymes, songs, board books, finger plays and each other. Siblings are welcome to join us. SPROUTS resumes January 3, 2009.
 
Kids! Mom's Morning Out. Mondays, November 3, 10, 17, and 24, and December 1, 8, and 15, from 10 - 11 a.m. in the Maggie Trafton Program Room. You and your child are invited on Monday mornings to join other families in the Children’s Program Room for books, toys, juice and a welcoming place for play and conversation. Mom’s Morning Out resumes January 5, 2009.
 
Kids! Preschool Stories. Wednesdays, November 5, 12, 19, and 26, and December 3 and 10, in the Maggie Trafton Program Room. Each Wednesday morning we offer our story program twice - at 9:30 and again 10:30 - so families may choose the most convenient time to attend. Everyone gathers in the Children's Room, and then the 3- to 5-year-olds parade to the program room while their grownups and siblings stay behind to choose books, make friends, and chat. Wednesday story programs are for children who are comfortable being in a group without their parent. This program is for families; agencies and childcare groups may contact the Library to schedule group visits at another time. Preschool Stories resumes January 7, 2009.
 
Teens Teen Anime Club. Wednesday, November 5 and 19 at 3 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. Twice each month, teen anime fans gather at APL to read, talk, draw and watch anime films. Refreshments are served and all teens are welcome. So join us!
 
Primitive Gingerbread Man in Santa’s Mitten. Thursday, November 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. Local artisans Jane Rioux and Jennifer Nyholm lead participants in making a gingerbread man from muslin. A materials fee of $19.00 covers the cost of the kit. Coffee and treats will be provided. Kids! Book Chat with Laurie. Saturday, November 8, from 1 - 1:45 p.m. in the Maggie Trafton Program Room. Laurie welcomes middle-grade readers to share and learn what's new and exciting in books written for their age group. Participants may bring favorite book recommendations to share and will enjoy fun, games, and refreshments. Best for kids in grades three through six. Book Chat resumes January 24, 2009.
 
Basket Bingo. Sunday, November 9 at Hasty Community Center at the Auburn Armory. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.; games begin at 1:00. Auburn Public Library holds its second Longaberger Basket bingo fundraiser. Take a chance to win beautiful Longaberger Baskets and Boyd Plush and Resin Bears. Kids! Saturday Stories with Judy D'Amour. Saturday, November 15 at 9:30 a.m. in the Children's Room. Judy leads children in making bird puppets and singing "Sing a Song of Sixpence." She’ll also read The Clay Pot Boy by Cynthia Jameson. Children may bring a favorite bear along to help dramatize “The Three Bears” and make a hand turkey to take home for Thanksgiving.
 
Energy 9-1-1. Sunday, November 16, from 1 - 4 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. With heating costs higher than ever, experts from the City of Auburn, Community Concepts, Consumers for Affordable Health Care, Northeast Bank, and Seniors Plus visit to share energy saving tips and talk one-on-one with consumers. Mayor Jenkins will discuss the City of Auburn’s rescue plan for people in acute need of heating assistance this winter. Sponsored by the City of Auburn and Northeast Bank.
 
Teens Teen Open Mic Nite. Friday, November 21 at 6 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. Singer-songwriters, instrumental musicians, comics, and spoken word poets are invited to attend. Doors open and registration begins at 5:30. Admission is free, but we ask that performers and audience members bring a can of food for the local food pantry. Finishing Touches Craft Project Night. Friday, November 28, from 7 – 11 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. Have a needlework or craft project you need to finish but too many distractions at home? If so, think: LIBRARY! If you have the time, we have the place! Just bring your project and relax with others while you finish it up. Refreshments will be served. To reserve your spot, call Sharon Hawkes at 333-6640 ext. 2023.
 
Kids! Creative Dramatics with Judy D'Amour: World Folktales. Saturday, December 6 at 9:30 a.m. in the Children's Room. This month, Judy brings a special program for early elementary grade children, who will enjoy dramatizing folktales from other countries. Included are Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile by Won-Ldy-Paye, from Liberia; and Beautiful Blackbird, an African tale by Maine author-illustrator Ashley Bryan. Best for children in grades 1-3.
 
Holiday Open House. Sunday, December 7 from 1 - 3 p.m. Join us for our annual community celebration. This year’s theme is “Old-Fashioned Holidays.”  Sing along with the ELHS Chorus, visit with Steve Martelli of the Great Falls Model Railroad Club and his wonderful trains, and hear special guest Lorraine Masure tell tales of “Growing up Franco-American (with no patent leather shoes).” There will be refreshments, crafts, and fun for the whole family.
 
Kids! Make a Little Gingerbread House. Wednesday, December 10, from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in the Maggie Trafton Program Room. Gabrielle Wallace and Dr. Pat Masonheimer lead children in grades 2- 6 in creating tiny cottages from graham crackers, candy, and icing. Sweet!  Space is limited; advance registration is required.
