Position Available: Collection Services Assistant

The Auburn Public Library is looking for a full time Library Assistant for our Collection Services department.   This paraprofessional position has primary responsibility for acquisitions, copy cataloging, material processing and periodical management. It also includes occasional coverage of public service desks. Hours may include some evenings and weekends.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelors degree, 1-2 years of experience in library services, and a proven record of strong customer service experience. Candidates should be well-read in recent popular books and genres. Formal coursework or experience in cataloging will be preferred. Familiarity with the Sierra library system and Minerva cataloging standards is a plus. The ideal candidate will enjoy detail, be highly organized and appreciate a high level of accuracy.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Pinhole Projection viewers Note that pinhole projection does not mean looking at the Sun through a pinhole! You project sunlight through the hole onto a surface and look at the solar image on the surface.

On Monday, August 21, the public is welcome to gather on the back lawn of the Library from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. to watch the eclipse. The Library will have a limited number of viewing glasses to hand out (required for viewing on library property) and fun activities to enjoy while waiting for “totality” at approximately 2:45.

 

Spring Book Sale June 23-24

The Auburn Public Library will hold its Spring Book Sale Friday June 23 from 4-6PM,  and Saturday June 24 from 9AM-1PM. Thousands of donated books, DVDs,  CDs and more are available for purchase at bargain prices. In addition, this year we have many picture books for children that have been withdrawn from our collection.

The sale will be held in the library’s Androscoggin Community Room and Book Sale Room.

Prices range from $.25 to $2.00.

Position Open: Administrative Assistant

The Auburn Public Library has a part-time opening (15 hours per week) for a talented administrative assistant due to a re-location.   You can join a team with a strong culture of service to the community and a warm and welcoming environment.   The assistant provides general support for the staff with programming promotion; fundraising; newsletters; working with vendors; and creating documents, databases, and spreadsheets.  The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED with 1 to 3 years of experience.  An associate’s degree or higher is preferred.  A qualified candidate will possess strong writing and editing skills and competence in common PC software suites.  A complete job description can be found on the Library’s website at www.auburnpubliclibrary.org.  Compensation will depend on experience and education.

Administrative Assistant Full Job Description

Film: Fort Bliss, May 11

On May 11th at 6:00 PM, Rob Reilly, Director of Adventure Programming for Camp Kieve Veterans Camp, will be on hand to lead discussions at the showing of the 2014 film Fort Bliss. As a thank you to veterans and their families, Camp Kieve offers family, Vietnam and Women-only Veteran’s camps for those who have experienced the stress of deployment during past and current conflicts. Fort Bliss tells the story of a decorated U.S. Army medic and single mother who struggles to rebuild her relationship with her young son after returning home from an extended tour in Afghanistan.

This presentation is part of the Library of America  World War I and America programming grant.  Authors, historians, veteran advocates, and veterans will lead discussions and share their experiences in veteran affairs and encourage an open dialogue with audience members.

World War I and America

The Auburn Public Library has received a World War I and America grant to host programs this May designed to bring together members of the veteran community, their families and the general public to explore how war has impacted lives. Authors, historians, veteran advocates, and veterans will lead discussions and share their experiences with audience members. The grant is funded by the Library of America and National Endowment for the Humanities to commemorate 100th anniversary of the nation’s entry into the war in 1917.

On May 18th at 6:00 PM, Richard Rubin, author of The Last of the Doughboys and the soon to be released Back Over There, will share from his interviews conducted with WWI veterans as the audience looks at how combat changes lives. Veterans and their families are encouraged to share their stories of how war has impacted their lives.

On May 25th at 6:00 PM, Dr. Elizabeth Bischof, professor at the University of Southern Maine and Project Manager for Maine’s World War I Memorials digital humanities project, will talk about her work in recording and preserving images of Maine’s World War I Memorials.  The digital humanities project will result in an interactive website that documents and maps Maine’s World War I memorials.

The events are free and open to the public, and will be presented in the Community Room on the Library’s lower level at 49 Spring Street.

Author visit with Paul Betit, March 16

Author and former Maine journalist Paul Betit will be at the library to share from his newest release “Let Me Tell A Story.” A graduate of the University of Maine, Betit worked as a general assignment reporter or as a sportswriter for nearly 39 years, including stints with the Kennebec Journal, the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram,

Let Me Tell A Story is a collection of first-person stories that take place over a 60-year period. With most of the stories set in Maine, the book starts with a tale about a 12-year-old boy who learns some important life lessons during a family trip to Aroostook County. It ends with a piece about an elderly Brunswick couple learning some lessons of their own while coming to grips with old ages. In between, readers meet old soldiers and young soldiers, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, disc jockeys and drug dealers and other sordid types. A number of the stories were inspired by the Betit’s experiences during the Vietnam War and its aftermath.

Download Library moves to Cloud Library March 1

The Download Library is moving! On March 1, 2017, the Maine InfoNet Download Library moved to a brand new e-book and eAudiobook platform called cloudLibrary. This will replace the Overdrive platform being used now. Once the system is live on March 1st, simply download the app for your device (note that the cloudLibrary will not work with e-ink Kindles (paperwhite) or with basic MP3 players that do not support apps).

To get started on your device or computer, go to http://yourcloudlibrary.com/index.php/en-us/how-it-works and follow the directions!

You can download the app, called cloudLibrary, in the Playstore for Android devices, the App Store for Apple/ iOS devices, and the Windows Store for Windows devices. For Kindle Fire devices go to http://yourcloudlibrary.com and click on the “available on Kindle Fire” link on the right side of the page.

You can also access the cloudLibrary system using a browser by going to http://download.maineinfonet.org and logging in by selecting your library from the list provided and logging in with your library card.

Note that if your card number begins with “20” it was issued from APL, if it begins with  “24” it was issued from LPL. You will need to select the issuing library regardless of your current home library.

 Holds and checkouts will not transfer to the new system, so any outstanding holds will need to be placed again after February 28. All items borrowed from Overdrive will be due on February 28.

Screenagers, March 9

Join us for a special screening of Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age.

Following the movie (runtime 68 minutes), please stay for a short panel discussion (30 minutes) featuring Anita Charles, Lecturer/Director of Secondary Teacher Education at Bates College, an educator from the Auburn School Department, a member of local law enforcement, and Luke Douglass, Interim Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Bates College.

This screening is free to the public, open to parents of children of all ages (teens, tweens and their parents are especially encouraged to attend), and is made possible by a grant from the Maine Public Library Fund and the Psychology Department at Bates College.
