Library Cards

1. Auburn Public Library materials may not be taken from the library without being checked out.

2. Borrowers' cards are issued at the library circulation desk at no charge to Auburn and Lewiston residents.

Borrowers' cards are also issued at no charge to non-residents in any of the following categories: non-residents who are Auburn or Lewiston property owners; non-residents who are employees of the City of Auburn; non-residents who are K-12 students or teachers of any Auburn school; non-residents who are active tutors with Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin; and non-residents who are active volunteers in the BookReach program. Proof of status is required. Non-resident cards are issued for one year.

To receive a borrowers' card, the person must provide the information requested on the application and present identification with name and current street address. Children and youth under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the application.

3. To those who do not meet the requirements for free cards, borrowers' cards are issued for one year for a $70 fee (or three months for $25 or six months for $50). These nonresident cards are issued upon completion of the application and payment of the fee. A single nonresident card may be used by all the members of an immediate family.

Circulation Policies

4. The borrowers' card must be presented whenever library materials are checked out. Cards are not transferable and the person in whose name the card is issued is responsible for all materials checked out on that card. For this reason loss or theft of a card should be reported at once so unauthorized use can be prevented. (Replacement cards are issued for a fee.)

5. Materials which can be checked out are those from the circulating collection and include books, magazines, audiobooks, music CDs, videos, DVDs, and CD-ROMs.  Certain materials, among them reference books, current magazines, and newspapers, are for in-library use only.

6. Most materials are loaned for two weeks. Books, audiobooks, and music CDs may be renewed for up to two additional two-week periods if not reserved (either before or during the initial two weeks). Renewals may be made in person, by telephone, or online.

7. Certain materials may be loaned for a shorter period or held for in-library use for a period of time at the discretion of the library staff for reasons such as class assignments, seasonal popularity, or scarcity of material.

8. Teachers or others who work with children, or students enrolled in children's literature courses, may check out children's books in quantity for classroom use.  At the discretion of the children's librarian, a limit may be placed on the number of books on a subject or of seasonal popularity.

9. Three items on any one subject (in any format or combination of formats) may be checked out at one time. There is no limit on the total number of items that may be borrowed, but there are limits on total numbers in certain formats (5 videos, 5 audiobooks, 5 music CDs, 5 magazines, 3 CD-ROMs, etc.).  It is expected that borrowers will be considerate of other library users and borrow a reasonable number of materials.

10. Some materials (books, audiobooks, music CDs, and magazines) not available because they are checked out or not on the shelf may be reserved. Notice that the materials are in is usually made by telephone.  Materials are held for five business days after notification.  There is a limit of five items on reserve at one time.

11. Fines are charged for each day adult materials are kept past the due date. Fines are computed each day the library is open. The fine is $1 per day for videos and DVDs, 10¢ per day for other adult materials. Borrowing privileges will be suspended when materials are five weeks overdue or fines or damage charges remain unpaid.

12. Videocassettes and DVDs

a. Borrowers must agree to follow the Videorules (see appendix).

b. Borrowers must be 16 or older.
