Cinder by Marissa Meyer

A book review by Faith Thompson

The Eastern Commonwealth of Earth is ravaged by a fearsome disease, letumosis, which kills you within days of its contraction. Cinder, a young cyborg who is the most gifted mechanic in New Beijing, does her best to stay healthy and stay out of the way of her stepmother, who blames her for most of the family’s problems.

But then Cinder’s stepsister, Peony, contracts letumosis. Cinder’s stepmother, frantic with worry, thrusts her into the palace laboratory, where she will be experimented on as the emperor’s scientists try to find a cure for the disease. Here she meets Kai, the emperor’s charming son, and learns of his possible impending engagement to the Lunar queen, Levana.

All is not as it seems and it is up to Cinder to figure it out.
