A book review by Faith Thompson

Claire is a young woman in Jonas’s community who is chosen for the unexciting but vital job of birth mother at the age of twelve. She is to produce three children who can be adopted by families in the community and further its good.

But then Jonas disappears from the community, taking Claire’s first son, Gabe, with him. Claire, desperate to find her son, follows them, nearly drowning in a storm when the boat she is on sinks. She is saved by people in a community which is neither dystopian nor utopian – full of people who want to just live their lives in a quiet, rural place.

Claire has just allowed herself to think that she could be happy here when she decides that she still has to find her son. But it will take everything she has to get there.

A book review by Faith Thompson

The village from Gathering Blue has begun the healing process, but it is another village somewhere far away through the Forest that also needs redemption.

This village is the one place where the disabled, the rebels, and everyone who is discontent with the dystopian system of every other place in their world can find safety. Mattie, a young boy who carries messages from village to village, is happy to live there, doing truly good things for the first time in his life.

But when the people of the Village grow selfish and wish to keep new people from coming in, the Forest turns on them, growing wild and evil like it never has before. Now it is up to Mattie, his little dog, and his old friend Kira to save the Village – and the world – from the menace lurking in the trees. They are aided by a blue-eyed young man who is known to some as Jonas…
