The Hobbit, or, there and back again by J.R.R. Tolkien

A book review by Callalily Crockett

You would never expect a hobbit to leave the comfort of his home…or would you?

The time period is between the time of the Faeries and the dominion of mankind.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who would never leave his homeland, The Shire. That is, until Gandalf, the gray wizard, offers him the adventure of a life time. After he meets Thorin Oakenshield, a dwarven prince with his company, what happens next? Good fortune or a terrible ending?

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

A book review by Faith Thompson

Ender is only six when he is discovered by the Battle School to be a brilliant leader. Taken from his family, including his beloved older sister, Valentine, Ender is isolated in space, where he must learn all he can, as quickly as he can. There is a war going on – a war against the buggers, creatures from deep space who want to destroy the humans on earth so that they can colonize the planet.

Ender finds himself excelling at everything, even while he is loathed by the other children in the school. He plays game after game of simulation, but in the end – is this a game? What are they training them for?  Or is he training himself?
