The Camden Conference and the Auburn Public Library invite you to a talk by Dr. Anita Charles.

In this talk, Dr. Charles will discuss her experiences in India, particularly focused on topics of social justice around gender, caste, and disability. She will give details of a research project around inclusion and disability in Indian schools and will share anecdotal stories and pictures of her time in India.

Dr. Charles is the Director of Secondary Teacher Education and Senior Lecturer at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, USA.  She has twice been a Fulbright scholar in India, first in 2016 and more recently in 2023. She has visited India six times, and three of her five grown children are from India.  She has a Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire, an M.Ed. from Harvard University, and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. Her interests in the field of education include Teacher Education, Literacy, Comparative and International Education, and Special Education.

This program will be offered in person in the Androscoggin Community Room or participants may register to attend virtually.  For our planning purposes, registration is required.  To register, visit the Library website -- www.auburnpubliclibrary.org -- or call the Reference Desk at 207-333-6640, ext. 4.  If attending virtually, the Zoom link will be emailed on the morning of the program.

The Camden Conference was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit, non-partisan educational organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues.

The 2024 conference “India: Rising Ambitions, Challenges at Home” will take place February 16-18, 2024, and will be in person, in Camden, Maine.  India is closing in on the world’s largest population and the second-largest economy while becoming a unique democracy, widely involved in global affairs. This brings to light several questions regarding its younger generation and its leadership in the Indo-Pacific region.  For more details on this Conference, visit their website at camdenconference.org.
