Girl on Fire

By Alicia Keys and Andrew Weiner

Meet Loretta “Lolo” Wright, a 15-year-old navigating the ups and downs of 10th grade. Lolo's had her fair share of teasing from other kids, but thankfully, she has her supportive brother, James, and her best friend, Nia, by her side. With her mom having left to deal with her struggles, Lolo lives with James, their dad, and their grandmother. Just when everything seems to be settling down, things take a surprising turn when James gets into a tough situation with a police officer. In a moment of fear, Lolo discovers some incredible powers she never knew she had!

Now, she has to find a way to balance school, deal with the mean kids, and navigate some really dangerous people—some of whom might change everything for the better or worse.

The story itself is engaging, though I felt it could’ve used a few more twists here and there. However, the illustrations are fantastic and add to the suspenseful storytelling. I’d recommend this book to anyone who feels a bit out of place or is on a journey to find where they truly belong.
