About the series:
This 6-week Qi Gong program offers a progressive, structured introduction to one of China’s most enduring health practices. Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and adapted for modern lifestyles, the course guides participants through a simplified version of the Eight Pieces of Brocade, combining gentle movement, breath regulation, and mindful awareness.
Each week builds upon the last, allowing participants to gradually develop a complete, flowing practice designed to support mobility, circulation, stress regulation, and overall vitality. Emphasis is placed on practical application, safety, and sustainable daily practice rather than theory or abstraction.
This program is appropriate for beginners and those seeking a grounded, medically informed approach to Qi Gong as part of an integrative health routine.
About the instructor:
Dr. John Alsobrooks, MD (China) is a physician, a Certified Personal Trainer and Exercise is Medicine specialist (American College of Sports Medicine) with over two decades of experience in Chinese martial arts, Qi Gong, and traditional Chinese medicine.
He trained extensively in China, including formal medical education at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, advanced Qi Gong and Martial Art studies, with a long-term discipleship in Wing Chun Kung Fu and Qi Gong traditions. Dr. Alsobrooks has taught Qi Gong in academic, clinical, and community settings, including hospitals and medical institutions, with a focus on accessible, evidence-informed practice.
His teaching style bridges classical lineage training with modern medical understanding, emphasizing functional movement, breath, and long-term health outcomes.
Health benefits:
Regular Qi Gong practice may support overall health by improving strength, mobility, balance, and coordination while placing minimal stress on the joints. When practiced consistently, participants may experience improved circulation, reduced muscle tension, and enhanced flexibility.
From both a modern and traditional Chinese medicine perspective, Qi Gong is associated with supporting cardiovascular health, regulating blood pressure, improving digestion, and promoting healthy glucose metabolism. Many practitioners also report reductions in chronic pain, stress, and fatigue, along with improved body awareness and resilience.
